Dachshund puppy training is fun and challenging because Dachshunds are smart little devils who are always looking for something to do! Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt ground-dwelling animals like rabbits, so they love to hunt and dig, and they like to keep busy. You will frequently find your dachshund puppy wrapped up in your bedding, burrowed away under the sofa, or ensconced in your cast aside pantyhose if you’re not careful!

Dachshunds can get into a lot of trouble with digging, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your dachshund puppy to keep him safe from suffocation hazards and escaping into the big, dangerous world. Be sure your Dachshund puppy always has plenty of safe, interesting toys to play with, and be sure your fence is very tight and secure. Most of all, spend lots of time with your Dachshund puppy. Don’t leave him outside alone for a long time or he will surely get bored and dig his way out no matter how many interesting toys he has. Dachshunds are very independent little dogs, and it will take some doing to convince your Dachshund puppy that he should listen to you. Start your Dachshund puppy training by teaching your puppy his name. Call him to you by name and give him lots of pets and praise when he comes to you. Avoid giving food treats for this as Dachshunds tend to put on weight easily. Since Dachshunds have very long spines, it’s important to avoid excess weight. Take your Dachshund puppy outside for toilet training hourly when he is very little. Praise him lavishly when he does his business in his specified toilet spot. He will soon learn that this is a good thing to do and will start asking to go out when he needs to. Remember to continue praising him for doing his business appropriately.

Dachshund Obedience Training:

Add to your Dachshund puppy training by teaching your puppy “No!” When he digs or chews inappropriately, tell him “No!” firmly and redirect him to an appropriate behavior by giving him an appropriate toy to chew or distracting him with another activity. Never be harsh or punitive with your Dachshund puppy. He will respond best to positive praise and gentle redirection.
